Man attempts to smuggle wife across border from Canada

JACKMAN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Two people were arrested last week after a man tried to smuggle his wife across the U.S./Canada border.

Police say 41-year-old Pierre Poulin attempted to cross the border at the Jackman port of entry on July 17. Poulin was giving inconsistent answers to Canadian Border Patrol questioning, so the officers conducted a search during which they found women's clothing and "suspicious equipment."

CBP officers notified agents at the Jackman station, who conducted a search for a possible illegal suspect. During that search, Border Patrol agents found 27-year-old Karoline Ramos De Oliveira, a citizen of Brazil and legal permanent resident of Canada.

Police say she was dressed in camouflage in the woods. They questioned Ramos and found that she didn't have the necessary paperwork to cross into the United States. Ramos was granted deportation to Canada.

Poulin has been charged with bringing in and harboring certain aliens, and will be tried by the United States Attorney's Office, District of Maine.
