Man arrested in Yarmouth, faces drug trafficking charges

YARMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A man from Boston is facing drug trafficking charges after being arrested in Yarmouth, following an investigation by the MDEA.

Alex Santiago was arrested in a parking lot on Route 1 in Yarmouth Wednesday during an undercover investigation by the MDEA and the Cumberland District Task Force.

State Police said Santiago traveled to Yarmouth to deliver 10 grams of heroin to an undercover agent. Yarmouth Police took him into custody without incident. Police also seized 10 grams of bulk heroin that was in Santiago's possession.

Bulk heroin is usually diluted and separated into individual doses before being sold. The estimated street value of the 10 grams is $3,000.

Santiago was transported to Cumberland County Jail. He is being held on $15,000 bail. He has a prior drug trafficking conviction.

Santiago's arrest is a part of a longer investigation into the increased presence of heroin in Brunswick and Sagadahoc County. State Police say a group of men from Massachusetts have been traveling to Maine on a weekly basis with large amounts of heroin. The men provided heroin to local Maine distributors who would then sell the heroin to local heroin users. The men from Massachusetts would stay at local hotels collecting the proceeds of the heroin sales.
