Maine Game Wardens seize illegal fish

HARPSWELL, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Maine Game Wardens have seized nearly 50 fish that are illegal to possess in Maine from a home in Harpswell. Koi are considered an invasive species. Marine biologists say they harm native species by out competing them for food. Also their eating habits can harm water quality. While seizing the fish, they also found a squirrel and a blue jay, which are also illegal to possess. Owner Georgette Curran has been fighting to keep the fish for the past two years.

"I'm devastated. Part of my being is gone" , Curran said from her home.

Wardens moved in after all her legal efforts were exhausted.

"One of the lower courts said that throughout this ordeal the department has acted with tact and restraint and really we feel like we've done all we could to accommodate her within the law", said Mark Lahit of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Curran now faces a June 17th date in district court for illegally possessing the Koi.
