Maine celebrates social media

(NEWS CENTER) -- Monday, June 30 is Mashable's fifth annual Social Media Day.The social media and tech news website started the day to celebrate and discuss the rapidly changing digital world.

There are meetups happening around the world Monday, from New York to Macedonia. Maine's event is happening in Falmouth at Tidesmart Global. There are several speakers, plus live music, drinks, food trucks and some lawn games. To join in on the conversation on social media, use the hashtag #SMDayME.

Social Media is a relatively new industry. In the past five years, a lot has happened in the online world.

2009: Facebook created the like button and the Oxford American Dictionary added the term "unfriend."

2010: Instagram and Pinterest were created.

2011: With smartphones and tablets and apps, social media is usable virtually anywhere.

2012: Facebook gained one billion users. It went on to purchase Instagram for $1 billion.

2013: Twitter went public. Instagram released the video option to compete with Vine.
