AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -- Maine is moving to block welfare benefit cards from being used in automated teller machines at prohibited locations, including pubs, liquor stores and strip clubs.
LIST: EBT blocked locations
Gov. Paul LePage said state law bans electronic benefit transfer cards from busing used at ATM machines in retail locations where more than half of revenue comes from sale of liquor, in strip clubs and in most areas in gambling facilities.
He said Monday that the latest effort to fight welfare fraud that includes putting photo on EBT cards "is not about politics." Instead, he said it's about making sure welfare dollars are used appropriately.
The LePage administration says California and Massachusetts also have blocked the use of EBT cards at questionable locations. Maine contacted California to discuss their program while creating this initiative.
