BIDDEFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — A group of Rotary Club members in Biddeford packed a 40-foot truck full of crutches, wheelchairs and walkers Saturday morning to send to people in Africa who are disabled.
The effort is part of a larger national program called "Crutches 4 Africa." They gathered roughly 3,500 "units." Organizer Dennis Robillard described a "unit" as a pair of crutches, or one wheelchair, or one walker.
This is the sixth time this group has sent a truckload of these items to Africa.
Robillard said these items would otherwise go to waste.
"Because of insurance and other regulations, they really don't get re-used," he said. "So here we are giving people a chance — a basic human right — a chance to move around and walk."
