Portland boil water order in effect after massive water main break

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Crews responded to a massive water main break at 98 Preble Street in Portland Thursday night. The break is in a 16 inch main, which is considered a large water main.

The Portland Water District says the road will be closed all night and into tomorrow, affecting the morning commute. The PWD has also issued a boil water order for portion of Monjoy Hill:Northeast of Sheridan Street. The boil order is in effect as of 10:30 PM February 16, 2017. As a precaution, consumers are directed to boil water for 1 minute at a rolling boil before  Drinking, making ice cubes, washing food, brushing teeth or in any other activity involving activity involving consumption of water. 

Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling wrote in a Facebook post PWD reduced the pressure all over the peninsula to find the problem.

Binga's Restaurant Manager Steve Marchitelli says they had to stop serving customers because of the water outage.
