Kelsey lends a hand: firefighter CPAT training

Kelsey lends a hand: Firefighter

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — To be a firefighter at the Portland Fire Department you must not only be courageous, but also physically fit.

Before even being considered for the fire academy you must pass a written test along with a fitness test. The fitness test is called the CPAT; candidate physical agility testing. The test consists of eight different stations that all must be completed in 10 minutes and 20 seconds.

I decided to test my strength and stamina by giving the course a go. What I didn't realized when I volunteered was that I would be wearing a 50 lbs weighted vest during the whole test. The difficulty of the course really puts in to perspective what firefighters go through when on the scene of a fire. Not to mention they also are dealing with heat, smoke and trying to navigate their way through a pitch black building.

I may have failed the test, but I gained even more respect, for those who battle the flames.
