Hoarder home condemned, man found dead inside

LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Lewiston police say it was like a horror movie: a malnourished woman, a dead man, and a dog all pulled from a home so full of trash firefighters had to break through windows just to get inside.

Lincoln Street was closed last night for quite a while as firefighters pulled trash, and then the homeowners out through a second floor window of the home. Neighbors knew the two as Lisa and Walter but say they hadn't seen either of them in months.

Police haven't officially released their names until next of kin can be notified of the man's death but tell us the woman was bedridden and the man had been taking care of her. He apparently got sick 3 weeks ago and died, likely in the last 24 hours.

Police were called to the home Monday afternoon for a well-being check. They found the man dead, and the woman severely malnourished and dehydrated.

A dog was also rescued from the home, neighbors say it's now at a shelter. Police believe another dog is dead in the basement, but there's too much trash in the way to get to it.

Lewiston Police say the couple was paranoid and had blocked all of their entrances to outsiders.

The woman remains in the hospital. The man's body has been taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner to determine a cause of death, but at this point his death is not considered suspicious.

The home is now condemned until a decision is made to either clean it out or demolish it.
