Gun safety with Windham Indoor Shooting Range

Windham indoor shooting range preaches safety

WINDHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — The Windham Indoor Shooting Range celebrated its one-year anniversary Saturday.

Peter Joyce, the training and range operations manager, said more people are buying guns, and that he uses each purchase as an opportunity to educate new owners on gun safety.

"Any time that someone comes through our door, we want to make sure that we can give them those safety skills right then," he said, "because that may be the only time that they want to seek training or talk to somebody."

Joyce is a former police officer. People also can try out guns at the range.

"No. 1: you have to be safe. Then you have to be accurate. Thirdly, you have to think about tactics," he said. "There's a lot of decisions that you have to make when you're under stress in that stressful situation, and you have to do everything right because you're going to be held accountable for every round that you fire."

When picking up a handgun, Joyce said people should never put their finger on the trigger.

"We only want that finger going on the trigger when someone decides to shoot," he said.

Joyce said people should also point the gun in a safe direction, such as an exterior wall. He said everyone should treat every gun as if it is loaded, and that people should check to make sure the gun is unloaded with a "press check."

"We grab and place our thumb here, and then we ride our thumb back until our index finger stops it," he said. "That way we can look right in there and see if there's a bullet in that gun."

Joyce said people also need to be aware of what is in front of and behind their intended target, and that all guns need to be securely stored.

"It's a big responsibility," he said. "We have to have 110 percent concentration any time we have a firearm in our hand, and we don't take anything for granted."
