Greenland Police helping Brentwood, Arkell family

BRENTWOOD, NH (NEWS CENTER) -- The death of Officer Steve Arkell is sadly the second line of duty police officer death in southern New Hampshire in a little more than two years.

Police in the area are still mourning the loss of Greenland Police Chief Michael Maloney, who was shot to death in April of 2012. Greenland Police are stepping up to help the Arkell family and the Brentwood Police Department through this difficult time.

After Chief Maloney's death Greenland Police established a fund to assist the families of fallen officers. The Chief Michael Maloney Memorial Fund has raised nearly $140 thousand in the past two years, with $25 thousand just recently coming in during the Chief Maloney Unity Run in April. That community support allowed the fund to donate to the Arkell family immediately following Officer Arkell's death. Greenland police officers are also joining area law enforcement to help Brentwood police officers with anything they need.

"Honestly because I became kind of an expert in it, and we had to deal with it, and there's not many agencies that have had to deal with line of duty deaths in the area," Greenland Police Sgt. Dawn Sawyer said.

There has been a fund set up to assist the Arkell family. Donations should be sent to:

Mrs. Stephen Arkell Fund
c/o TD Bank
53 Church Street
Kingston, NH 03848
