FRYEBURG, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Fryeburg Police Officers are now equipped with electronic control devices called tasers.
On Monday, with the assistance of officers from the Bridgton Police Department, Fryeburg Police officers went through the taser ertification process and are now certified to carry tasers while on duty.
Fiddlehead Outdoors, LLC has donated funding for the department to purchase two tasers, holsters and cartridges and has committed to supporting the program for the next five years costing no additional money to the tax payers.
During the certification process, officers got to experience being incapacitated by the same tasers they will be carrying. Fryeburg Selectman Paul Naughton (Chairman) was the guest of honor at the certification training and volunteered to be tased.
"I am very impressed with Selectman Naughton's dedication to our taser program. Not many people would volunteer to be hit with fifty-thousand volts. It is comforting to know that all three of the Selectman and Town Manager are extremely supportive in making sure our officers are safe. " - acting Chief of Police Joshua Potvin
"I am pleased that Fiddlehead Campground has supported my goal of progressively advancing the police department with modern tools and technology. We are very grateful for their support." - acting Chief of Police Joshua Potvin
"Tasers are a valuable tool that modern police officers have at their disposal and will offer our officers with an extra tool for their safety and for the safety of the citizens we protect." - acting Chief of Police Joshua Potvin
"Many times our officers are working alone and have had to wait until surrounding agencies respond with a TASER before apprehending a violent, non-compliant offender who is on drugs and/or alcohol." - acting Chief of Police Joshua Potvin
"Taser have been tested and proven to protect officers and citizens, all while reducing injury claims and excessive force litigation. We have put a 'use of control' policy in place and will hold the officers accountable for following proper protocol when deploying the taser. A thorough administrative review is conducted on all use of force/control incidents." - acting Chief of Police Joshua Potvin
