Fishery management council to meet in Portland

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Portland, Maine is hosting a meeting of the New England Fishery Management Council this week that will consider numerous issues related to the northeastern fishing industry.

The meeting takes place from June 17 to 19. The council - an inter-governmental body that represents state and federal interests - will consider a request for emergency action regarding the Atlantic herring fishery. The fishery has faced restrictions this year because of concerns about stock depletion. There is also a request for a modification of the haddock catch limit, contingent on the results of an upcoming stock assessment.

Reports about scallops and groundfish are also on the agenda.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Holiday Inn By The Bay on Spring Street in Portland.
