Exeter family business stays open despite massive fire

Family business open despite massive fire

EXETER, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — A family in Exeter is determined to keep their small business running after an overnight fire destroyed their barn warehouse.

Crews from as many as 10 towns were called in Sunday night to battle the flames. The intense flames and smoke could be seen for miles.

"I saw the whole barn engulfed in flames and just incredible smoke and fire,” said neighbor Tom Vincent.

Now the Perkins' family is cleaning up, grateful that those crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to their home just feet away.

Fire crews said they struggled with water supply due to a number of "dry hydrants" that were reportedly used by farmers in need of water for their crops.

The family was inside at the time but got out safely. They say a passing car stopped to alert them of the fire.

The barn held straw, grain and wood pellets for the Perkco Supply Store.

It has been in their family for more than 30 years, and the family said they are still open for business.

"If any of the buildings had to go up that one was the best one because his store didn't go up and he can still open for business," Vincent said.

The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. Investigators are expected to be on scene Tuesday.
