UPDATED 4:50 p.m.: Kittens were safely transferred to facility, boxes were left outside and misconstrued for being abandoned.
AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Officials from the Kennebec Valley Humane Society say someone left boxes on their steps with a mother and five kittens...one problem, the kittens and cat weren't there.
Staff discovered the empty boxes Wednesday morning and searched the premises for the kittens and cat but they were no where to be found.
The Kennebec Valley Humane Society is advising people if they find animals they can not care for, to only drop off during their hours of operation. They are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. They say they do not charge a fee for giving up an animal if people can not pay.
They also say no animal should be left at any shelter in this way because it is dangerous, especially with Maine weather. They say the person who left the kittens and cat must have been in a very desperate situation.
The Kennebec Valley Humane Society is an open intake shelter with animals coming from over 20 towns and cities daily. They suggest people call animal control officers, police departments, even friends when they can not care for animals.
