Lewiston man seriously injured when car rear-ends truck on Turnpike

SCARBOROUGH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — A driver from Lewiston suffered serious injuries Thursday in a crash between his car and a tractor-trailer on the Maine Turnpike.

Thirty-year-old Erik James was in surgery at Maine Medical Center as of early that afternoon, state police told state DPS spokesperson Steve McCausland.

The collision happened around noon in the southbound lanes. Troopers told McCausland that James' car slammed into the rear of the truck as the big rig was changing lanes at mile 40.

The truck driver, 39-year-old Jesus Benitez of Haverhill, Massachusetts, was not injured, police said.

Traffic was backed up as of Thursday afternoon. Troopers advised drivers to exercise caution in the area, and that the crash site would be clear by the evening commute.

Disclosure: Erik is a member of the production team at NEWS CENTER. All of us at WCSH 6 and WLBZ 2 are hoping he has a full recovery and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
