Congress passes bill to strengthen Canada border security

Senate hearing examines Maine/US border with Canada.

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) – The 2016 presidential election has shed much light on the U.S.-Mexico border. However now, congress has started to focus on the northern border.

It extends for over 5,000 miles and there are 14 entry ports in Maine.

In an effort to strengthen that border and help keep Mainers safe, Congress has passed the Northern Border Security Review Act.

Senators Angus King and Susan Collins have made it a joint effort to sponsor that act which aims to prevent threats of terrorism and reduce criminal activity.

At a confidential briefing on Tuesday, high-ranking officials from the U.S. Border Patrol reported the recent increase in smuggling and trafficking trends as well as their concerns about staffing levels and available technology.

The Northern Border security Review Act would station more officers at the remote areas of the border and provide them with the necessary tools to combat drug and human trafficking.

Although some fear that the heightened security measures will have a negative impact on residential life, Senator King disagreed.

“I don't think it'll have any effect on the people out there, except maybe to make them sleep a little bit better at night,” he said. “The fact that we were able to get it through both houses of congress unanimously testifies to the fact that the rest of the congress thinks it's important as well.”

“We know that the border is highly porous and has not received the attention nor the resources that our southern border has received,” said Susan Collins.

Both Senators agree that law enforcement officers and border patrol agents are the first line of defense in maintaining the security of our border with Canada, so having more of them situated at rural entryways will help keep residents safer.
