(NEWS CENTER) -- Police say one man was stabbed on the playground at Riverton Park Apartments early Friday morning.
Residents and police say a large group of people were gathered at the playground around 2:30am when a fight broke out. The male victim suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Maine Medical Center.
More than 600 people live at the apartment complex, according to the property manager, with more than half of those being children, and residents say incidents like this are rare. Housing Authority officials say the safety of their residents is their number one priority, and anyone who was directly involved with the stabbing could face eviction.
"We have eviction proceedings for a variety of reasons, but violence is the top one and the one where it's the fastest eviction and we go after things very aggressively," said Portland Housing Authority executive director, Mark Adelson. Adelson added that he wants the atmosphere at Riverton Park to return to normal as quickly as possible, "We don't want this to be an ongoing issue, we want the residents to feel like it's been resolved."
The property manager said there are security cameras on site, which will be reviewed with the Portland Police. No one is in custody at this time and the investigation is ongoing. However, police believe this to have been an isolated incident, and say the public is not in danger.
