PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — The Portland Water District issued a "boil water" order Monday night for three islands in Casco Bay due to a water main break that possibly introduced bacteria into the water supply.
The main on Great Diamond Island broke around 8 p.m. Monday, according to Portland Water District spokesperson Michelle Clements.
Crews fixed the main and took samples on Tuesday, and expect to have the results of the test back by Wednesday morning.
"It's just a precautionary measure. We don't have any results that it is contaminated, but there is a potential so on the safe side, we have to issue a boil order," Clements said.
Clements said about 1,200 customers were affected. She said anyone who plans to use their water for drinking, brushing their teeth, washing food, making ice cubes, or any other activity that involves consuming water, to boil it to eliminate the possibility of any bacteria.
