BIDDEFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- By the time Maine State Police arrested a convicted sex offender in Biddeford, several new charges were added to his record.
Clifford Mason is required by law to register as sex offender based on his past conviction for sexual abuse of a minor. But police said he failed to register, prompting a warrant to be issued for him.
Sgt. Jeremy Forbes said he spotted Mason staggering down Jefferson Street in Biddeford on Friday afternoon with an open container of Fireball Whiskey in his hand. Upon being confronted, Forbes said Mason ran off.
Forbes said he found Mason hiding behind a dumpster and arrested him. But as they drove away, Forbes said Mason tried to kick out the windows of the police cruiser. A new car was brought in from the Biddeford Police Dept. to take Mason the rest of the way to York County Jail. He is being held there with bail set at $1,250.
Police said Mason's actions resulted in additional charges of refusing to submit to arrest or detention, violation of condition of release and disorderly conduct.
