Study shows summer can cause kids to pack on the pounds

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The beautiful weather arrived just in time for summer vacation. The question for parents now is how will they keep their children active during the next few months. A recent study shows when summer rolls around some kids actually gain weight.

Harvard University looked at more than 10,000 kids between the ages of five and twelve with data showing summertime accelerates some kids weight gain. Some possible reasons are with a less structured environment in some homes children tend to snack more, eat worse, and consume themselves in video games.

The study looked at 5,300 kindergarten and first-graders in 310 U.S. schools, researchers found that the kids' body mass index growth was more than twice as fast during summer vacation as during the school year.

We asked local parents around Bangor how they plan to keep their families active this summer.
