Vandals hit Augusta hike and bike trail

AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police in Augusta are looking for whoever vandalized parts of the Kennebec River Rail Trail.

City officials say sometime Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning, vandals hit more than a dozen spots near the entrance of the trail.

Park benches, walls and mile markers were sprayed with bright red paint.
Fence posts were knocked down and destroyed.

A graffiti response team made up of city employees and volunteers spent hours removing the paint and making repairs.
Police believe this incident and others in the past several months may be connected.'

'I am guessing its the same individual or two that is doing this because it had gone away for a number of years fortunately, we respond with an immediate clean up,' said Leif Dahlin, the director of Community Services for the city of Augusta.

Anyone who sees any suspicious activity along the the six and half mile trail should contact Augusta police.
