AAA of Northern New England checks if cars are ready for Maine winter

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Winter is on its way, and with it comes the expected car trouble. That's why AAA of Northern New England is reminding drivers to get there vehicles ready for the rough conditions ahead.

Saturday, AAA crews gave free winter car checkups to both members and non-members at their headquarters in Portland. Professionals examined everything from tire pressure, to fluid levels, to battery life. Crew members with the not-for-profit corporation say most people don't think about these less assuming aspects of maintenance until it's too late, and that getting everything checked up now will prevent people form having to call AAA for road side help in the future.

"People don't often think to check their tire pressure and that's one of the most important things you should check before driving in the cold," said Erik Lowell, supervisor of Maine fleet operations for AAA, as he explained blowout risks and other dangers of low tire pressure. Lowell went on to says that the checkup is worth the while, "It's best to know what's wrong with it ahead of time. Sometimes it's not always what you want to hear but it definitely will save a headache down the road."

AAA of Northern New England holds the winter checkup clinic every year. Last year crews check about 100 cars.
