Students attend Yarmouth songwriting workshop

YARMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Coming up with the right lyrics to a song is a struggle many musicians face. Some ambitious students from Casco Bay High School recently got a hand with the creative process.

Students of all grades from the high school attended an intensive songwriting workshop at 317 Main Community Music Center in Yarmouth. The week long workshop broke down the process of brainstorming lyrics, putting them to notes and then performing them for an audience. Jake Hoffman was one of the teachers in charge of helping students through the process.

"Expected to have a really diverse group and it's proved to be and there's a lot of different sounds coming as you walk down the hall. You know you're hearing everything and that's been pretty fun," said Hoffman.

Every room at 317 Main had a different genre of music represented from rap to classical and even some Caribbean inspired ukulele played by senior, Emma Hindall. She, along with her partner Halie Jipson, came up with two songs during the workshop. Success that surprised the girls who though they'd struggle with their own lyrics.

"What do I write a song about and how do I make sense of things and they're like ok write down ten random words and then make sentences that rhyme with those words and then we had a song," said Hindall with a smile.
