(NEWS CENTER) -- One man from Maine is ready to embark on an impressive journey: hiking the Appalachian Trail, but first he's trying to spread an important message about why he's doing it.
Jason Weed wants his hike to help raise money and awareness for Almost Home Rescue of New England, which rescues dogs from the south, where they're more likely to be euthanized.
He's kicked off a campaign called Appalachian Tails. He's hoping to raise $10,000 for Almost Home through fundraisers he will be holding until he heads to Georgia in March.
Weed says he's wanted to hike the entire trail for years, but with his rescue dog Shelby. It wasn't until Shelby passed away that he decided to finally just do it. Of course, in Shelby's honor, he wanted to do more, starting a fundraiser for one of his favorite rescue groups.
