Colin Sargent's new book is a piece of historical fiction called "The Boston Castrato." It's about a boy who was castrated to preserve his singing voice. As an adult he moves to Boston and becomes a part of the city's outsider community.
Sargent was partially inspired by Jane Austen in picking a castrato for his main character. He says that a character who lacks something is generally a compelling point for audiences.
Sargent has two events this week:
Gulf of Maine Books, 134 Maine Street, Brunswick. November 16, 7 p.m. Maine’s famous alternative independent bookstore. Reading, book discussion, and signing of The Boston Castrato.
