Monhegan Island has a year-round population of about 65 people. And the difficulty of living ten miles out to sea means many things are quite expensive. You might think that'd mean a brewery would be an unsuccessful enterprise.
But you would be wrong.
Monhegan Brewing Company is not only getting by, business is booming. Even though it costs $10 to throw away one bag of trash and even though two months during the summer account for the bulk of the brewery's business.
If you want to try the beer on the mainland, good luck. A tiny amount is bottled and shipped to shore, but only in the Rockland area.
