13 year-old hit and killed in crosswalk, on way to school

Local response to death of young boy in Lewiston.

LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --  Police say a student  is dead after being hit by a car while walking to school Thursday.

Police say 13-year-old Jayden Cho-Sargent, an 8th grader at Lewiston Middle School, was crossing Main at Frye in the crosswalk when he was struck by a Ford F-150 truck. 

The driver of the truck is being identified by police as 54- year-old  Laurie Young of South Paris. Police say she is cooperating with the investigation.

Cho-Sargent  was dragged for a distance up the street until Young stopped the car and discovered the boy underneath her truck.

Lieutenant Mike McGonagle says the boy was struck at approximately 7:10 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident shut down both southbound and northbound lanes of Maine street from Riverside to Frye streets. 

Police say this accident is being investigated and reconstructed by the Lewiston Police Department. The investigation is ongoing and will be forward to the Androscoggin District Attorney’s Office for review.
