The kids over at Dike Newell Elementary School are having a ball. Using stability balls and drum sticks, they get to work up a sweat in the Drums Alive class. This class, a new addition to their Phys Ed program, is a perfect way to combine brain fitness with physical fitness. It's proven that this class positively effects your brain and coordination skills and the best part is you're having fun. Principal Sally Brown had their teachers try out this class during a workshop. Once the teachers saw just how much fun it is there was no question that they needed to bring this into their school. The school has since purchased their own stability balls and drum sticks.
"Health and wellness is something we really need to focus on these days because kids are plugged in. I want them to unplug and start doing things like this."
All ages can benefit from a class like this. Instructor Carol Richards says that this class also has huge benefits for people with disabilities or autism and hopes to expand this program in Maine.
