  • There has been a lot of talk in the media over the past couple months about yoga and the possible dangers it has when it comes to injury. This Fit at Five focuses on the positive impact yoga can have on your life. We take a look at how athletes are benefiting from yoga. Helping them perform better and avoid injury.

Terry Cockburn of the Freeport Yoga Company has been working with the Bowdoin Women's Basketball Team for the past couple seasons. She is able to base their yoga practices on where they are in the season. Their coach first decided that yoga would be a good fit for the women after she witnessed some career ending injuries on the team. Since adding yoga to their training the team has been injury free.

For athletes hard work on the court results in tight hips and hamstrings so much of the yoga focus is on opening and stretch those tight areas. It may sound easy, but many of these athletes find the poses Terry has them doing extremely challenging. Another great benefit from yoga is the mental strength and focus it provides them. It has taught these women to take a minute, focus, and breath during intense moments of a basketball game.
