AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -- Former New England Patriots star Andre Tippett is speaking out in favor of a bill in Maine addressing a growing concern from school sport fields to the National Football League: head injuries.
Pro Football Hall of Famer Trippett addressed a State House news conference Wednesday to support a bill to help schools better manage head injuries suffered by athletes. Trippett says the days of "taking one for the Gipper are all over."
The bill requires the Maine Education Department to adopt a policy for all schools to remove from practices and games any student suspected of having sustained a head injury until written clearance for the student to resume play.
Representing the NFL, David Krichavsky said player safety is a top league priority and that extends to student athletes.
