UMaine adds waitlist for fall '16 admission

University of Maine adds waitlist

ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The number of people applying early to The University of Maine for the 2016 fall semester is so high the school had to create a waiting list.  According to university officials, it has been a long time since there's been a school-wide wait list.

UMaine has received more than 14,000 applications for the 2016 fall semester. That's about 2,000 more than last year, according to Jeffrey Hecker, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost for The University of Maine.

Provost Hecker said the reason behind the spike in applications is an aggressive marketing campaign. He said this allows the University to be more selective in choosing students.

According to a recent press release, the projected incoming class is more than 2,100 students. The university said as of March 11, the number of first year student applications were up 17% over the same time last year.

There is also a rise in transfer student applications.

Also according to the press release,  "At its March meeting the University of Maine System Board of Trustees voted to extend the tuition freeze for a sixth year."

Hecker said there are various impacts on both the state and students.

"We're bringing in young people to become part of the workforce, for Maine's future. In the immediate sense we're bringing people into the state of Maine who rent houses, buy pizza, have their relatives visit; there's an immediate economic impact. And then I think it's also allowing us to meet the educational needs of students in Maine, by again working in this collaborative way with the other University of Maine system campuses," said Hecker.

UMaine said they will soon notify those students who are available for the waitlist. For those who do opt onto the waiting list, they will find out if they have been accepted by May 6.

They also said that if they are "...unable to offer admittance for the fall, wait-listed students will be guaranteed admission at the University of Maine at Augusta, University of Maine at Fort Kent, University of Maine at Machias, University of Maine at Presque Isle and the University of Southern Maine."
