Cutler man appears in court on manslaughter charge

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Six months after a head-on crash took the life of a woman, prosecutors filed a manslaughter charge against Scott Ramsdell. The Cutler man was in court Wednesday afternoon on the charge.

The deadly accident happened on January 27. Prosecutors said Ramsdell struck and killed a Millinocket teacher, Denise Golding, in a head-on collision. Ramdell was heading to Machias for another court case related to domestic violence charges before the accident happened. Prosecutors said he just left the Bangor methadone clinic and was under the influence of heavy drugs on Route 9 when the accident occurred. Golding worked at Stearns High School in Millinocket where she taught English as a second language to international students.

He was not required to enter a plea Wednesday because it is a felony charge. If the Grand Jury hands down the indictment, prosecutors said they will file more charges. Assistant DA to Penobscot County, Marianne Oinch said at the scene of the accident investigators observed a lot of pills by the wreck.

"We had an expert who reviewed those and it was his opinion that the combination and the amount of that would impair somebody ability to safely operate a car," said Oinch.

The court set bail at $50,000 security or $20,000 cash.
