Bingham food pantry closing after 33 years

BINGHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Putting food on the table for some isn't easy. A Bingham food pantry is closing its doors on August 19th to this lifeline for many residents.

For 33 years, Louise Carl has been running the Bingham Area Food Pantry. Its current home is in the rectory at St. Peter's Church, but the church is selling that building.

Louise said she delivers about 2 weeks worth of the food to 40 families every month.

"These people who don't have the food or the means to go to other places to get food are going to go without. Either they are going to buy their medicine or they are going to buy food."

The group is still searching for a new location.

And whoever comes forward would have to provide free rent and overhead costs of the building, because all the money that's donated to the shelter goes to buying food.

If you'd like to help, the pantry is still taking donations. For next month, the families would get a Hannaford gift card instead of receiving food directly.
