According to investigators, Clark told his father he shot Wagner accidentally, then fired a second shot because Wagner was suffering.
Clark had built up a successful mortgage business, then watched it come crashing down. According to friends, he lived a hard partying lifestyle. Robert Wagner worked for him and was also financially well off.
On February 14th, after clark's business had folded and Wagner went to work for another lender, the two men and some friends spent a night of heavy drinking at the Portland strip club Platinum Plus.
According to investigators, Wagner was at Clark's home later that night when Clark shot him at least twice.
The prosecutor told jurors the shooting was no accident and that Clark tried to cover it up because he had committed a crime.
Clark's attorney told jurors the case is about fear, that Steven Clark feared Robert Wagner.
The trial began Monday morning with opening statements. It is expected to last about a week.
