Alexander Bardow tells The Boston Globe that part-way through tunnel construction, Big Dig managers switched to a design that called for a heavier concrete ceiling. It was apparently less
expensive and easier to install.
Earlier this month, several 3 ton ceiling panels in the I-90 tunnel fell onto a car, killing the passenger.
Investigators probing the accident are looking at why the heavy panels were chosen, how they were secured and whether they were the right way to go for the tunnel.
