PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The annual Maine Boat Builders' Show opened in Portland Friday, and that's where a Maine film-maker announced his plan for a documentary about one of the state's master builders.
Ralph Stanley built wooden boats on Mount Desert Island for more than fifty years. He came to be known as one of the best builders in the state. He was honored for his skill by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1999.
His son, Richard Stanley, now carries on that tradition, operating Richard Stanley Custom Boats.
Maine Film maker Jeff Dobbs of Bar Harbor, Maine, is trying to complete a documentary about Ralph Stanley. It is a project he started more than two years ago.
But Dobbs said he needs to raise $54,000 to pay for all the work that comes with making a film. He is using the online fundraising tool called kickstarter.com to reach out beyond the Mount Desert Island community for donations.
Dobbs said there are many other causes asking for money from the wealthy residents of MDI, so he decided to try the new, digital form of fundraising to see how it works.
He has 30 days to raise the required amount of money under kickstarter.com campaign rules. Dobbs said his site went live on Thursday. More than $2,000 have already been raised.
