PROSPECT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Penobscot narrows bridge in Prospect has reopened. The bridge was shut down Sunday morning when chunks of ice, some as big as basketballs, began falling from the cables. Several vehicles were hit and two of them were totaled.
Today crews cleared snow and ice from the bridge's road surface. A crane was used to knock some of the ice off the cables. Monday night engineers decided that the plummeting temperatures will mean that no more ice will be melting for a while.
So, vehicles are allowed over the bridge until this weekend, when it will be closed again for ice removal.
