PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Pope Francis has named the Most Reverend Robert P. Deeley as the 12th Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.

It is welcome news for Catholics in Maine, who have been waiting for this announcement since May of last year, when Bishop Richard Malone announced he would be leaving Portland to become the Bishop in Buffalo, New York. Bishop Deeley has been serving as the Auxilary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston since January of this year. He grew up outside of Boston, and has spent most of his career in the Boston area. Deeley says he has spent time in Maine as a tourist, and he is looking forward to serving the people who live and work here.

"My statement is brief because I come with no set plan or program," Deeley said in a press conference Wednesday. "I come only as your new shepherd. And as Pope Francis is fond of telling Bishops, I will have to get to know the smell of the sheep before I can serve you as well as the Lord calls me to."

The date of Bishop Deeley's Installation Mass will be Friday, February 14th.
