SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A recent rash of car accidents where motorists have struck police vehicles pulled off to the side of the road during traffic stops have State Troopers concerned.
"Obviously, you never know who you are dealing with when you stop somebody, you don't know who is in the car, you are always concerned about weapons and threats of that nature, but drivers that are distracted is one of the highest concerns for us out here," stated Maine State Police Corporal Lance McClish.
He says despite a state law that makes passing too close to emergency vehicles illegal, some drivers don't seem to care about their own safety, let alone the safety of police officers doing their job.
"We have troopers that have been hit," he said. "There have been several lately that have been hit by drivers either going too fast or not paying attention or losing control of their vehicle, so it is a pretty big concern for us out here on the highway."
