The small plane took off from Waterville and was headed to the Portland Jetport when it developed engine trouble at an altitude of about 2000 feet. The pilot, Sachin Hejaji of Falmouth, decided he had to make an emergency landing on the busy highway. He touched down cleanly and pulled to the side of the road.
The plane came to rest near mile marker 13 in Falmouth in the passing lane. The incident brought traffic southbound to a standstill and caused major delays northbound as well as people looked on in disbelief.
Work crews and first responders were faced with the task of moving the plane off the busy road and were forced to close the southbound lanes of the highway so they could load the plane on to a flat bed truck and transport it to the Maine Department of Transportation maintenance lot a few miles away in Yarmouth. Investigators with the FAA inspected the plane on site and will work to determine exactly what happened.
