PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The city of Portland will limit the enforcement of its new ban on standing on medians until a lawsuit goes to trial.
Three people are suing the city over the new ban, which was passed to address the city's panhandling problem. The three individuals say the ordinance infringes on their First Amendment rights.
A judge will hear the case in an expedited one-day trial November 19th. Until then, the parties have agreed that Portland Police will only enforce the ban if a person standing on a median is openly impaired by drugs or alcohol or is posing a threat to traffic.
