WATERVILLE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Friday was a big day for a small college in Waterville.
Thomas College celebrated the groundbreaking of its new Harold Alfond Academic Center. The 36,000 square foot center will double the amount of space for academics at the school with new classrooms, a library, a state of the art lab for finance students, a cafe, and office space.
The Harold Alfond Foundation pledged $5 million for the center, provided the school got matching donations.
Thomas College President Laurie Lachance said, "We don't have the rich roots that a lot of colleges have. But when a family like the Alfond family steps forward and invests in our athletic facilities and now our major academic expansion, it gives a boost to us that gives the generosity of others to bear."
Thomas College has raised $11.5 million towards its $12.5 million goal. It's also expanding by building a new residence hall.
