OLD TOWN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- New details emerged Thursday concerning the two people who died Wednesday night at an apartment building in the city.
State police say 35-year-old April Haskell lost her life at the hands of her boyfriend 28-year-old Chris Ouellette. Authorities say the couple had been together for about six years but had only been living in an apartment in Old Town for a few months. Ouellette faced charges for attacking his girlfriend back in 2009 but they were later dropped. He was however convicted of attacking her nephew in 2010.
Investigators say Ouellette stabbed Haskell inside their apartment at 253 Main Street in Old Town. The couple's two children were inside the apartment at the time. Police responded after Ouellette called 9-1-1 to report what had happened.
Authorities were able to get Ouellette to release his children once they arrived on scene. State police trooper Barry Meserve later shot Ouellette after he refused to let responders in the apartment to tend to Haskell. Both people were found dead once police entered the apartment.
State investigators were back on the scene early Thursday morning were they were trying to figure out what led to last night's stabbing. Trooper Meserve has been placed on administrative leave while the state attorney general's office investigates the use of deadly force.
Authorities say the two children who witnessed the murder are a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old and have been placed in the custody of relatives.
