LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- We're less than a week away from the Dempsey Challenge, and participants of the walk/run or ride have been busy raising money for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing.

One group is blowing away the competition, raising more than $16,000; they call themselves Richard's Army.  Bert Gosselin, member of the group, says that's a fundraising record for the Dempsey Center this year.

Gosselin is Richard's brother in law; he says Richard's Army was formed shortly after Richard lost his battle to melanoma this January.

While he's always been involved in the Dempsey Challenge, Richard's passing pushed friends and family to campaign even harder this year, raising more money and Bert plans to take part in the 10k AND the 100 mile bicycle ride.

Mark Turcotte with the Dempsey Center says the extra funds will help them help more people.
