SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Every year, firefighters from Portland and South Portland come together to honor firefighters who died in the line of duty.
This year, the ceremony marks the 100th anniversary of the Portland Veteran Firemen's Monument. It shows the families of fallen firefighters that their loved ones have not been forgotten, and reminds the public of the sacrifices firefighters make to to keep them safe.
"For that to go on now a century later with still the same importance and the same remembrance is a very honorable thing" Portland Fire Chief Jerome LaMoria told NEWS CENTER.
Governor Paul LePage has ordered all flags in the state be lowered to half-staff in honor of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend and Fire Prevention Week.
