AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Red Cross is thanking those who stepped up to help the victims of the Lewiston arson fires.

The United Valley chapter of the Red Cross held a celebration Thursday to thank the businesses, non-profits, and individuals who donated money, food, clothing, and other items in the wake of a string of fires that left hundreds homeless. A couple of the fire victims were on hand to also express their gratitude to the community. United Way of Androscoggin County Executive Director Joleen Bedard says the help went far beyond the social service organizations typically charged with aiding in recovery after a disaster.

"Everyone stepped up, everyone wanted to do more," Bedard told NEWS CENTER. "Anybody, whether it was a business, a municipality, just a person living in this community after reading the newspaper or watching the news, they wanted to do something."

According to the United Way, all of the people who were displaced by the fire are now in permanent housing.
