JAY, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A busy section of Jay is under a boil order Saturday night after a series of water main breaks.
The main on Smith Avenue broke for the third time Saturday and officials are worried the water supply may be contaminated. The leak itself is repaired.
As a result, people and businesses from Smith Avenue and up along Main Street to the top of Jay Hill are under a boil order. Officials say they don't have any evidence of a specific threat, but the measure is a safety precaution until the main can be tested.
The affected area is a busy part of town with a number of shops, the Hannaford and the McDonald's all affected.
The order is in effect until the test results come back. Officials say that may be two or three days.
