BRUNSWICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Pejepscot Historical Society has received a donation they originally thought was too good to be true.

The historical society owns the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum in Brunswick. An anonymous donor from Massachusetts claimed to have Chamberlain's original Medal of Honor, an award Chamberlain was given for his Infantry's stand at Little Round Top in the battle of Gettysburg.

The donor claims the medal was hidden in the back of a book he bought at a book sale from a church in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Chamberlain's granddaughter left her estate to that church when she died.

After verification through the Smithsonian, Library of Congress, Maine State Museum, and the Army's Awards and Decorations branch, the historical society says this medal is the real deal.

Chamberlain was awarded 2 medals, one in 1896, and another in 1904 -- that second one is held at Bowdoin College.

If you'd like to view the original medal, it will be on display at the Pejepscot Historical Society on Park Row in Brunswick, October 10th through the 12th, from 10am-4pm.
