PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The 2014 Maine Teacher of the Year has been awarded to Karen McDonald, a language arts teacher at Portland's King Middle School.
Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen made the announcement at a surprise assembly at McDonald's school Tuesday morning.
"I think that I'm in a school that's been very innovative and forward thinking," said McDonald.
"I get a lot of energy from working with colleagues, so I think I've been lucky to be in a place where the adult culture and student culture is so amazing."
McDonald will serve as an education ambassador to other schools, sharing innovative teaching techniques and ideas.
This event was Commissioner Bowen's last public appearance before stepping down to work for a national education non-profit.
